Former UK Soldier Accused of Murdering Kenya Female Shows Up in Courtroom
An individual has appeared in court as extradition hearings commenced in the case of the victim Agnes Wanjiru, a female from Kenya who was murdered near a British army base in 2012.
Purkiss, 38 years old, who is hailing from the Manchester area, appeared before Westminster magistrates court on Friday, and told the court he intended to contest the extradition request. It is understood that he was taken into custody on Thursday evening.
A warrant for arrest for the defendant was authorized by a Kenyan court in Nairobi in September. Legal prosecutors informed the Kenyan judiciary that the accused had been charged with a one count, of homicide, and that the Kenyan authorities would request his deportation to answer to accusations.
Purkiss was once employed as a medic with the regiment of the Duke of Lancaster, the army unit for the northwestern England, including on tours of Afghanistan.
Agnes Wanjiru, 21 years old, a beautician who had a infant daughter, vanished after a evening out, and her remains was located after two months in the grounds of the accommodation where she had last been seen.
Nobody had before been taken into custody or accused in relation to her passing. His detention followed a recent detective probe, which followed a article in 2021 by a weekly publication, in which the media outlet contacted several active and retired troops in the regiment.
This inquiry has been spearheaded by Kenyan detectives, which, under a bilateral defence agreement, holds legal authority in the matter.
