Information Available Concerning the Victims of the Bondi Beach Shooting

A minimum of 16 lives were killed and over 40 were wounded when attackers opened fire at a Hanukah gathering at Bondi Beach, a tragedy Australian authorities have called a terrorist attack.

In the latest update, authorities have confirmed the number of fatalities remains at 16, encompassing one of the suspected gunmen. Furthermore, 42 people with injuries were admitted to medical facilities.

Those who died have not yet been officially identified, but authorities state their ages span between 10 and 87 years old.

Listed are the victims who have been named so far.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Reportedly a father of five children, he served as the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and acquaintances described him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.

“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a relative asked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their newest son in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, as stated by his wife.

She described the moments before the shooting, saying they were standing when the gunfire began. “He pushed his body up because he wished to be near me,” she said.

The husband and wife were both Holocaust survivors, having experienced immense hardship in their youth. They had later immigrated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

French authorities have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is among the victims.

Publicly, the Foreign Minister expressed that France shared the grief of his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This despicable act is a fresh and tragic example of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must put a stop to,” the message continued.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was rushed to the Sydney Children’s Hospital succumbed to her injuries, according to police reports.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was a fatality in the incident, as per reports referencing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

From the 42 people taken to hospitals, many remain under care, with five in serious condition. Those hurt include two police officers who responded to the attack.

A casualty is a bystander who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the gunmen. Hailed as a local hero, he received bullet wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. Sources state he was injured and underwent treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he recounted the incident as an “horrific scene,” but also noted the actions of those who rushed to help. He said he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the attack. He told reporters he heard “a large number” of gunshots.

“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I was hit. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
