Our team is checking images and video circulated earlier today that show the aftermath of a alleged car bomb explosion that Russian officials say killed a senior soldier in Moscow.
Officials in Russia stated that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was inside the vehicle that detonated and that he later died of his injuries. An investigation is under way.
Our starting point to check the site of where the images originated relied on social media reports saying the blast happened on Yasenevaya Street in the southern district of the capital city of Russia.
We used street-view imagery on Google Maps and the local mapping service Yandex Maps to corroborate the distinctive yellow colour of a nearby apartment building captured in the video.
Locating other structures, streetlights and the road configuration verified the exact location the footage were taken.
We also checked that the videos were new and that the images had not been digital alteration.
