The New Animated Series' Introductory Sequence Selected the Incorrect Critical Role Track
The Mighty Nein, the most recent animated series from Critical Role, unveiled a new opening credits. It showcases the beloved cast of misfits, outcasts, and criminals fighting hard and taking names, while teasing at multiple heart-wrenching personal histories for key figures including the voice actor's wizard Caleb, and Travis Willingham's orc warlock, Fjord.
Overall, the opening appears amazing. However, I felt that something was missing in the music selection.
The intro uses "Welcome to the Continent", a truly stellar song composed by producer and singer the talented musician. This piece originating from the soundtrack album of the same name, the second release put out by the production company's record label Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a wonderful sentimental option, and I believe that devotees of the second campaign will appreciate its presence.
But for me, The Mighty Nein's opening doesn't quite capture the hype and energy that was part of the second campaign's actual-play adventure. "Your Turn to Roll", composed by musician Jason Charles Miller, became an immediate hit in my view when it was first revealed in that year, and it improved further when cast member the performer wrote words to the melody for the series' animated intro in 2018.
Featuring vocals from Ashley Johnson, another performer, a co-star, as well as Riegel himself, the track was catchy and fun. Back then, I hadn't seen the second campaign yet, but this was such an earworm that I kept it on my device. This track that excites you before you start an episode of adventurous fun.
The Mighty Nein's intro with "the new song" doesn't strike the right notes in my opinion. It's a grand composition, but from what I know of this party, I can't help but feel that its mood is a little off.
Of course, Critical Role has already said that the series will have some surprises and differences from the actual-play campaign. A tonal change for its opening appears as among these.
The Mighty Nein will be available to watch on the streaming service from Nov. 19. If you can't wait before that, or want a head start to get to know the personas of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the original episodes are accessible on Spotify and YouTube.
