When Beachgoers Escaped Violence, Widely-Shared Picture Shows Beach Patrol Dashing ‘Full Speed’ To the Scene.

Alexandra Ching, a permanent inhabitant of Bondi, views the renowned coast as her own backyard. On a recent Sunday evening, she, along with numerous others in the area, detected loud noises echoing through the community.

“We all thought the same, but I thought it was daylight and there was nothing visible,” she explains. Exiting her home, she witnessed people “flooding up Bondi Road”. The faces on display made it clear trouble had occurred.

Positioned on the road, speaking to a pair who had hurried up the hill soaked, she became aware of someone moving up behind her. It was a beach patrol officer, dashing to Bondi without shoes from the adjacent Tamarama beach – roughly 1.5km – while holding a medical device.

“I caught a voice saying ‘excuse me’, and as I turned I just saw this streak in blue,” Ching describes. “He was just flying past. He was alone moving in the direction that everyone was trying to flee, carrying that large equipment and unshod … He was sprinting at something that surely every fibre in your being would tell you to run in the reverse way.

“Absolutely no pause, but just fully maximum effort racing.”

A Powerful Moment of Courage During Crisis

The photograph Ching captured of the rescuer, later named as Jackson Doolan, quickly spread as a prime example of acts of courage in the wake of the violent incident.

Andy Reid, a second lifeguard, says that Doolan, called “Jacko”, ran from Tamarama beach to support the rest of his team at Bondi, as well as to help other rescuers, law enforcement and paramedics attending to numerous victims.

Community Outpouring and Support

Doolan’s actions was part of a broader narrative to be shared by the community, with the patrol base adjacent to the site of the violence becoming a impromptu medical station. Reports indicate that colleagues were also seen taking action, for instance entering the water to assist people needing help.

After the attack, messages of support circulated widely. An online statement shared gratitude for the responders who demonstrated that “goodness will always triumph over darkness”.

The team of lifeguards published a statement, explaining they were “coming to terms with what occurred”.

“Our thanks go out to all for your supportive words and encouragement. We are overwhelmed by the care for our team,” the organization commented. “When ready, we will share our stories in the belief that it supports those impacted.”

Local Government Recognition

Waverley council, the local authority that hires many full-time lifeguards, stated that the crew performed exceptionally from the instant the shooting started until late that nighttime.

“There have been so many powerful narratives, but the popular image of Jackson Doolan, racing from Tamarama to Bondi with a defibrillator so he could help preserve life is extraordinary,” stated a council representative.

“The team show dedication every day in keeping our iconic beaches secure for surfers and swimmers, but what we saw on Sunday should be commended.

“While we mourn and come to terms with the terror of this brutal and barbaric tragedy, I think it is important that we reflect on just how much light we have witnessed in the presence of such hatred.”
